How to Measure For a Door Handle
When it comes to choosing new door handles, you need to make sure that your choice will fit properly, which means you need to accurately measure the door. It’ll save you a lot of trouble in the long run!
Door Thickness
One of the most important factors is the thickness of the door. Most doors in the UK are 35mm thick, but fire doors are thicker at 44mm. External doors are also thicker, as are UPVC or insulated doors.
Whilst these are the standard measurements, there are always situations with a door that doesn’t fit any of these standards. If you need help choosing the right door handle for your door thickness, get in touch and we’ll help you out!
Height
There are three common door heights in the UK, these are 1981mm (78”), 2032mm (80”) or 2040mm. However, in older properties, this could be completely different. This measurement is really handy if you are measuring for door hinges too as you’ll need to calculate how many you need.
Stile Width
The stile width is the distance from the edge of the door to any panelling, glazing or moulding. If this width is narrow, you’ll need shorter latches, which may have an impact on the type of handle you can fit. In doors with a very narrow style, a door knob might even prove to be more appropriate.
Backset
Measure the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the knob or handle. Ideally, you want the centre to be in the middle of the stile, but this isn’t always possible.
Industry standard backsets are usually one of the following:
- 44mm
- 57mm
- 82mm
- 130mm
If a door is glazed, you’ll want a smaller backset to keep the latch as far away from the glass as possible.
Spindle to Lock
Next, measure the distance from the centre of the spindle to the centre of the lock. In the UK, the industry standards are:
- 47.5mm for a lever lock
- 47.5mm for a bathroom lock
- 47.5mm for a Euro profile cylinder lock
- 48.5mm for an oval profile cylinder lock
- 70 or 92mm for a multi-point Euro profile cylinder lock
