How to Replace a Door Handle
Replacing a door handle can be much easier than fitting a new one, especially if you buy a door handle that is like-for-like and has the same dimensions.
To replace a door handle, you’ll need:
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Tape measure
- Replacement door handles
Step 1 - Removing the Old Handle
First, you want to wedge your door open securely with a door stop to stop the door swinging around whilst you work. Once the door is securely in place, identify and remove any fixings that are holding the current door handle in place. These are usually screwed straight through the cover plate, however if you have a screwless effect door handle, you may have a cover to remove first.
Once you’ve taken out the screws, the door handle should become loose.
Step 2 - Removing The Plate and Latch
Remove the plate from the door. Sometimes styles of plate have a small slot in one edge that is the perfect size for a screwdriver to pop the plate off. Remove any further screws that are uncovered to expose the spindle.
Unscrew the existing latch, sliding it out.
Unless the new handle is identical in size and position, you might need to replace the strike plate too.
Step 3 - Double Checking Measurements
Before getting started, you need to double check that the current backset is appropriate for the new door handle. In the UK, the most common size is 44.5mm, however, some handles require a deeper backset. If you’re not sure, this information should be included in documentation supplied with the new handle.
Step 4 - Installing the New Handle
First, install the new latch and screw it in place. First to hand tight, and then with a drill once you’re satisfied with the fit.

Step 5 - Tidying Up
If you’ve had to move the backset or have chosen a style of door handle that is considerably different than the old one, you might find that you have some gaps, dips or imperfections. If there are any gaps, simply break out the filler, sand it down, and repaint it. Just make sure you either remove the door handle temporarily or use a lot of masking tape to keep your hard work clean!
